The Indian Paper Industry

Paper is human innovation & a wonderful product. It is hard to imagine what life would be like without paper. Despite the technological revolution leading to increased computerization of operations, paper still holds on to its instance and has become an essential commodity of our everyday life. India is the largest growing paper market in the world and globally the focus of foreign paper manufacturers. India’s share in world production of paper is about 3.7%, with estimated production of over 17-million tpa. The industry provides direct employment to 0.5-million people, and around 1.5-million indirectly.

Future looks more promising as the domestic demand is on the rise. The per capita paper consumption in India is currently around 14-kgs, while the global average is 57-kgs. This is projected to increase to at least 17-kgs by 2024-25 (IPMA). The annual turnover of the paper industry is estimated to be US$ 8.6 bn. to $ 13.4 billion by 2024, exhibiting a CAGR of 7.8% during 2019-2024.

The paper industry is changing, undergoing and developing with exciting prospects for new growth. The industry is going through the most substantial transformation it has seen in many decades. Packaging is growing all over the world, along with tissue papers, and pulp for hygiene products.

The Paper Industry - Cultivating More Trees for Sustainable Growth

The focus of paper industry is now shifting towards more Eco-friendly Products & Technology.

The paper industry in India is not into mining, just cultivation of trees and No use the reserved forest. The paper industry seeks to maintain and grow its economic contribution to society, foster the well-being of our communities, and utilize sustainable manufacturing practices and fiber procurement measures that protect the environment and ensure that our resources will be as available for future generations as they are today.

Indian Paper mills are contributing over 70% of total country’s production by manufacturing an Eco-friendly paper from agro residues such as wheat straw, rice straw, bagasse, sarkanda, otherwise waste, waste paper etc. as such converting ‘Waste into Wealth’ and conserving forest resources to an extent to 20 million trees per year.

Paper Industry in India is not a forest-based industry, but an agro-based industry, providing jobs and income to lakhs of farmers involved in cultivating trees.
