At the end of 2021, Metsä Group’s Kuura textile fibre, which is still under development, was successful in the Finnish Quality Innovation Award competition and was thus invited to take part in the international competition organised by the global quality community.

Success came even now, as Kuura was selected as second best, globally, in Potential Innovations category. The category was won by a Spanish startup that is developing a solution for diabetes treatment.

The international Quality Innovation Award event was held for the fifteenth time. This time, altogether 561 competitors had been selected to the follow-up competition.

“Succeeding in the national competition was already a big deal for us. The international-level recognition we have now received creates even more faith in the fact that we are working with genuinely important development issues,” describes Niklas von Weymarn, CEO of Metsä Spring, Metsä Group’s innovation company.

Kuura is a textile fibre based on Finnish wood. The production method and product properties are still under development. A joint venture between Metsä Spring and the Japanese ITOCHU Corporation is currently operating a unique demo plant in Äänekoski, Finland, where the new production method for Kuura fibre is tested and further developed.
