Canfor Pulp Products and Canfor Corporation recently released their joint 2023 Sustainability Report, outlining their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts and progress towards established goals.
"As the world transitions to a low-carbon economy, the demand for our sustainably sourced forest products is on the rise," said Kevin Edgson, President and CEO of Canfor Pulp. "While our core strength lies in the versatility and sustainability of our products, this extends to our dedicated workforce who develop them responsibly."
The report highlights several key achievements:
- Combating Climate Change:Canfor has set a new target to reduce scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 25% by 2030, building on their existing commitment to cut scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030. These targets are undergoing validation by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company has also developed a Climate Change Strategy to guide climate-related initiatives.
- Diversity and Inclusion:Canfor made significant progress in diversity and inclusion, with 50% of new hires in North America coming from under-represented groups and nearly all salaried employees in the region completing inclusion and diversity awareness training.
- Sustainable Forestry:Canfor maintains responsible forest management practices. All Canfor-managed forests are certified to SFI® or FSC® standards, and all sourced wood in North American operations is certified to the SFI Fibre Sourcing Standard.
- Indigenous Partnerships:Nearly half of Canfor's Canadian operating area is covered by agreements with Indigenous Nations. The company is committed to fostering mutually beneficial partnerships with Indigenous communities.
